Sensory Play at Little Bright Explorers: Learning Through Everyday Exploration

Sensory Play Programs

Inspired by the Reggio Emilia approach, we embrace the belief that:

"The environment is the third teacher.

- Loris Malaguzzi

This philosophy reminds us that thoughtfully designed learning environments play a vital role in inspiring children's curiosity, creativity and exploration. By enriching our classrooms with engaging sensory experiences, we create opportunities for children to investigate, discover and learn through meaningful play every day.

Rather than being an occasional activity, sensory experiences are thoughtfully planned and woven into each day to support children's learning, development and wellbeing. Every sensory invitation is designed with purpose and tailored to each child's stage of development, helping them build confidence, independence and a lifelong love of learning.

What is Sensory Play?

Sensory play is any activity that stimulates a child's senses. It encourages children to investigate, experiment and make sense of the world through hands-on exploration.

These experiences may include:

  • Exploring different textures such as sand, water, foam and natural materials
  • Mixing colours through painting and water play
  • Playing with playdough and loose parts
  • Nature exploration
  • Music, movement and dance
  • Light tables and visual discovery
  • Building and creating with open-ended materials

These simple yet powerful experiences strengthen children's brain development while making learning engaging, meaningful and enjoyable.

Sensory Play for Every Age

At Little Bright Explorers, we recognise that every child develops at their own pace. Our educators carefully plan sensory experiences that are appropriate for each age group, ensuring children are challenged, supported and inspired.

👶 Babies (0–2 years)

For our youngest learners, sensory play focuses on developing trust, curiosity and early communication.

Experiences include:

  • Soft sensory treasure baskets
  • Water exploration
  • Mirror play
  • Tummy time with textured materials
  • Light and colour exploration
  • Music and gentle movement

These experiences support early brain development, strengthen muscles, improve hand-eye coordination and encourage secure relationships with trusted educators.

🚶 Toddlers (2–3 years)

Toddlers are naturally curious and eager to explore. Our sensory experiences encourage independence, creativity and language development.

Activities may include:

  • Rainbow rice exploration
  • Playdough invitations
  • Potion making
  • Bubble foam play
  • Nature collages
  • Water and sand play

These hands-on experiences help children develop fine motor skills, problem-solving abilities, imagination and social skills as they begin learning alongside their peers.

🌟 Kindy Children (3–5 years)

As children grow, sensory play becomes more complex and incorporates elements of science, engineering, literacy and mathematics.

Our Kindy children enjoy:

  • STEAM investigations
  • Loose parts construction
  • Science experiments
  • Light table exploration
  • Clay and natural materials
  • Sensory writing trays

These experiences encourage children to ask questions, solve problems, think creatively and become confident, capable learners.

Why is Sensory Play So Important?

Sensory play supports every area of a child's development.

🧠 Brain Development

Hands-on exploration strengthens neural pathways, helping children process information, make connections and develop critical thinking skills.

💬 Language Development

As educators engage children in meaningful conversations during play, children develop new vocabulary, communication skills and confidence expressing their ideas.

✋ Fine and Gross Motor Skills

Scooping, pouring, squeezing, climbing and manipulating materials strengthen the muscles children need for writing, self-care and everyday life.

❤️ Social and Emotional Development

Sensory play encourages cooperation, sharing, turn-taking and emotional regulation while helping children build positive relationships with others.

💡 Creativity and Problem Solving

Open-ended materials inspire children to explore different possibilities, test ideas and discover solutions through experimentation.

🌿 Wellbeing and Self-Regulation

Many sensory experiences provide calming opportunities that help children manage emotions, reduce stress and improve concentration.

Learning Through Play Every Day

At Little Bright Explorers, sensory play is much more than a fun activity—it is a purposeful part of our curriculum. Our educators carefully observe children's interests and extend their learning through thoughtfully planned experiences that align with the Early Years Learning Framework (EYLF).

Every sensory invitation is designed to support children's development across all five learning outcomes while encouraging them to:

  • Explore with confidence
  • Investigate and discover
  • Create and imagine
  • Develop friendships
  • Build resilience
  • Grow as capable, independent learners

Every day offers new opportunities for children to learn through play in a safe, nurturing and inspiring environment.

Experience the Magic of Sensory Play

The best way to understand the benefits of sensory play is to experience it firsthand.

At Little Bright Explorers, we regularly host Sensory Play Sessions where local families can join us, explore our learning environments and discover how purposeful play supports children's development from infancy through to kindergarten.

Whether you're looking for childcare now or planning ahead, we'd love to welcome you to Little Bright Explorers and show you how children thrive through curiosity, creativity and meaningful play.

Come and experience the joy of learning through play—we can't wait to meet you and your little explorer!
